Welcome to
✨Gathering Light ✨
Dear Friends,
Thank you for being here to celebrate these incredible humans and witness their dancing this evening! 💛
I find myself at a loss of words when I think about how hard these artists have been working, the care with which they’ve shown up for each other and this work, and the community that has been growing since I first started teaching adult dance classes back in 2019. I know I speak for us all when I say how much it means to have you here with us! We can’t wait to share all that we’ve been working on 🥰
Gathering Light features performances by:
The MING MVMT Collective, eight emerging professional contemporary dance artists with unique and powerful artistic voices. The Collective marks MING MVMT’s expansion into the professional community and serves to support and amplify the next generation of creators.
The Performance Program Dancers from our Beginner, Beg/Int, and Intermediate cohorts. These performers are the heart of everything we do. We have dancers who have discovered the joy of movement in adulthood for the first time, others who are returning to dance after years away, others still who have never stopped and are simply continuing to honour the call to dance. Each of these artists has their own story, their own journey, yet all are united in the magic that is movement and music.
Special Guests including new works by Serena Finlayson, Phil Kim, and Kate McDonald, PLUS an appearance by Run The Flex’s Black Ops Academy.

THANK YOU for showing up for the dancer in your life, for cheering them (all!) on, and coming together with us tonight to share in our love of music, dance, and the big feelings that move us ✨

Primary Sponsor
Our friends at Run The Flex - Toronto’s BEST Hip Hop studio - generously donated all the rehearsal space used for the MING MVMT Collective. 🖤
Run The Flex offers Hip Hop and MORE for all ages and levels of dancers. We love how they never fail to greet you with a smile, encourage you to get out of your comfort zone, and believe in you - even before you believe in yourself.

With gratitude to
Originally constructed in 1955 as a Buddhist Temple, 918 Bathurst Centre for Culture, Arts, Media and Education has since become a dynamic cultural hub for the community and one of Toronto’s quintessential event spaces.
We are thrilled to host our first show in their unique and intimate space and invite you to keep them in mind for events ranging from concerts to workshops, corporate events to music festivals. 918 is truly a canvas of possibility 🤩
Gaby Alfonso - who you can spot performing in Never Let Me Go and The Quality of Mercy! - is the brilliant eye behind Gaby Alf Photography. Not only was she behind all of our MING MVMT branding images, that you see across our website and social media, but she also captured the stunning pictures of the MING MVMT Collective artists. Thank you, Gaby, for donating your time, energy, and artistry! 💛

THANK YOU to the following individuals who contributed to the success of Gathering Light in a myriad of ways. This evening wouldn’t have been possible without you 🙏🏼
The Performance Program Leads: Kayla Champis, Delia Clark-Bautista, and Becca Ward, for continuously going above and beyond, holding down the fort during comp season, creating beautiful pieces of choreography that highlight and celebrate each dancer, for sourcing and crafting costume pieces, bringing tea + treats on long days, jumping into the group chats, and keeping me calm and encouraged throughout this whole process. We are all so lucky to have had you by our side and cheering us on.
Our Volunteer Squad: Averil Dubois, Michelle Hempstock, Meital Itzkovich, Teresa Nguyen, and Carol Oya. Thank you for being so willing to jump in, welcome our guests, and support the behind the scenes magic of the evening.
Jonathan Pappo, Daniel, and the whole 918 Bathurst team, for their time, energy, patience, and thoughtful answers to every question we threw their way.
Caitlin Chu (@caikiru), Phil Kim (@kimphilms), and Kate McDonald (@katyspacebird), for capturing this evening’s performances on camera! We are honoured to have your creative brilliance here with us - including Phil and Kate’s choreography!! You truly do it all and it means the world to have you on board.
Nicole Rosove for listening to every voice note rant and ramble, advising on logistics, sharing wisdom and expertise, holding space for friendship alongside the demands of running her own business, producing her own show, and raising the cutest (and most energetic) toddler of all time.
Jee Lam for being our backstage manager and super helper, even in the thick of her final year of her Master’s in Physiotherapy at U of T - WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU!! And I’ll never stop trying to convince you to stay in Toronto and be the MING MVMT resident physio.
Segun Makinde (the handsomest man in the world) for the daily pep talks, encouragement, support, snuggles, and cuddles. For keeping my mind calm and my heart full. I love you so much! Rich mornings forever.
Barb Dow for being the most supportive dance mum from day one. None of this would exist without your unwavering belief in me and my capabilities. Thank you for everything, everything, always, always… next year, you can sew all the costumes!
The Performance Program Dancers
Last, but most certainly not least, to each and every dancer who took a leap of faith and signed up for our very first Performance Programs - thank you 💛
I’ve dreamt of doing a show like this for years and couldn’t have imagined a better, more supportive and beautiful community of humans to live through this experience with. You each brought a unique perspective, personal artistry, and dedicated care to this process. You inspire me with your work ethic and determination. I am deeply proud of your growth and the way you have brought each piece to life. I am so moved by your willingness to embrace every challenge you encountered with grace and grit. I appreciate your honesty, the way you supported me as I navigated our first production.
Dancing is hard and so vulnerable. It’s one thing to brave the studio and another to brave the stage!
You did both! And you did both beautifully.
Thank you for trusting me and your Program Leads with this chapter of your dance journey.

Land Acknowledgement
We gather here today on the traditional land of the Wendake, Haudenosaunee, Mississauga, and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. These nations have been here long before us and will be here long after us. It is because Indigenous peoples have cared for and nurtured this land that we are able to be here today at MING MVMT’s inaugural production, Gathering Light.
It is not lost on us that this act of gathering in community and celebrating life through music and movement is one of the many parts of Indigenous culture that our government attempted to erase and eradicate. We invite you to reflect on the resilience and perseverance of the Indigenous peoples and the ways in which settler colonization continues to cause harm to many, while benefiting others.
We will be donating a portion of box office revenue to Outside Looking In (OLI): an Indigenous-led organization with a demonstrated track record of supporting and empowering Indigenous youth from high school to their career path of choice. They have been making a difference in the lives of Indigenous youths since 2007 when they began introducing dance classes to remote communities as a tool to motivate youth to stay in school… we’re really big fans of the work they do!!
We invite you to learn more about OLI, in addition to Native Earth Performing Arts, Canada’s oldest Indigenous theatre company, and Red Sky Performance, a global leader in contemporary Indigenous arts and culture. 💛
